Course Descriptions:
Spanish
Elementary Spanish is designed to teach students to understand and speak Spanish, as another medium of communication. This course serves as an introduction to a foreign language. Students will practice the following skills,throughout the course: grammar, listening, speaking, writing, and reading. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to explore cultural aspects of the language and the respective countries, where Spanish is their primary language. Cultural information is taught throughout the duration of the course. The most important thing and where the emphasis is placed, throughout this course, is on conversation, vocabulary and good usage of the language. Listening and speaking skills are required, as oral proficiency and correct pronunciation are primary goals. The classroom experience will provide students with an appreciation and development of cultural awareness and the appreciation of learning a foreign language.
STEM
Our STEM program is designed to teach students basic collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity skills. Each grade level will explore the world of engineering through hands-on exploration and curriculum that focus’ on different areas of engineering. The students will work with either a partner or in a small group to find solutions to simple and complex problems using the Engineering Design Process. The goal of STEM is to teach and reinforce skills that will last a lifetime and allow them to be a part of a growing global and interplanetary community.
ART
Art Education emphasizes on the introduction and application of the Design Elements and Principles of Art. This is a studio class intended to build knowledge, skill and confidence in art making efforts. Students will also explore various media, techniques, and artists in history. The students will be graded on the following aspects: Project Requirements, Craftsmanship/Neatness, Creativity, and Behavior/Participation.
Music
Music Education provides a learning environment for students to develop musical knowledge, skills, and understandings through a wide array of experiences—from performance to deep listening, to composition, to historical study of music. Students will also experience hands on activities with various instruments and have opportunities to create original music and choreography.
PE
Physical Education provides very important elements that helps students maintain proper health and fitness. It also allows students to gain knowledge about healthy lifestyle choices. The class is designed to allow students the opportunity to gain awareness about their health and behaviors. PE allows each student the opportunity to work on communication, sportsmanship and leadership skills. During the year students will work together and challenge each other while maintaining a respectful class culture. Each student is required to have proper shoes and uniform in order to participate.
Materials:
Materials will be provided for each course. A wish list is attached and is on each teacher’s Weebly of possible items you can donate to our classrooms. :)
Grading Information:
Students will receive two letter grades in each of their courses. One of the letter grades is an academic grade while the other letter grade is an effort grade. The academic grade will demonstrate student mastery of the course objectives and assignments. The effort grade will reflect the student’s citizenship and participation in class.
*These rules and consequences will apply across all the special area classes.
